3,000 record low temps set in July

NCDC: Climate of 2009 - June Global Analysis

Global Highlights:
Based on preliminary data, the globally averaged combined land and sea surface temperature was the second warmest on record for June and the January-June year-to-date tied with 2004 as the fifth warmest on record.
Large portions of each inhabited continent were substantially warmer than average during June 2009. The warmest anomalies were most notable in parts of Africa and most of Eurasia. The most notable cooler-than-average temperatures were present from the southwestern U.S. to the Northern Plains, the Canadian Prairie Provinces, central Asia, and across the boundary of northeastern China and southeastern Russia.

NOAA: Global Ocean Surface Temperature Warmest on Record for June
July 17, 2009

The world’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for June, breaking the previous high mark set in 2005, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Additionally, the combined average global land and ocean surface temperature for June was second-warmest on record. The global records began in 1880.

Global Climate Statistics
The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for June 2009 was the second warmest on record, behind 2005, 1.12 degrees F (0.62 degree C) above the 20th century average of 59.9 degrees F (15.5 degrees C).
Separately, the global ocean surface temperature for June 2009 was the warmest on record, 1.06 degrees F (0.59 degree C) above the 20th century average of 61.5 degrees F (16.4 degrees C).
Each hemisphere broke its June record for warmest ocean surface temperature. In the Northern Hemisphere, the warm anomaly of 1.17 degrees F (0.65 degree C) surpassed the previous record of 1.12 degrees F (0.62 degree C), set in 2005. The Southern Hemisphere’s increase of 0.99 degree F (0.55 degree C) exceeded the old record of 0.92 degree F (0.51 degree C), set in 1998.
The global land surface temperature for June 2009 was 1.26 degrees F (0.70 degree C) above the 20th century average of 55.9 degrees F (13.3 degrees C), and ranked as the sixth-warmest June on record.
Notable Developments and Events
El Niño is back after six straight months of increased sea-surface temperature anomalies. June sea surface temperatures in the region were more than 0.9 degree F (0.5 degree C) above average.
Terrestrial warmth was most notable in Africa. Considerable warmth also occurred in Siberia and in the lands around the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Cooler-than-average land locations included the U.S. Northern Plains, the Canadian Prairie Provinces, and central Asia.
Arctic sea ice covered an average of 4.4 million square miles (11.5 million square kilometers) during June, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. This is 5.6 percent below the 1979-2000 average extent. By contrast, the 2007 record for the least Arctic sea ice extent was 5.5 percent below average. Antarctic sea ice extent in June was 3.9 percent above the 1979-2000 average.
Heavy rain fell over central Europe, triggering mudslides and floods. Thirteen fatalities were reported. According to reports, this was central Europe's worst natural disaster since the 2002 floods that claimed 17 lives and caused nearly $3 billion in damages.

It sounds like the cooler temperatures were in areas in which there are a very dense collection of statins and the warming areas are notable in their lack of many stations at all causing the need for estimates by the experts.

Dr. Hansen, can you please tell me what you think the average temperature should be? Whatever you say, we will write it down and publish it and then wait for you to adjust it upward.

The satelite temperature measurements, on the other hand, show that the June temperature was .1 degree above the average established since the 60s and that it ranked in the lower half of Junes on record.

Of course, relying on the land based (some readings are there and some are not, some stations have closed and some are newly established, many are used from the US and few are present across the rest of world) stations produces the desired result after the appropriate averaging and projecting so let's keep using them.

Again using the technology available to Ben Franklin is quaint, but perhaps a taste of the date from the computer age would be nice:

StarBaseOC: Argos Buoy's record no "Global Warming"

The new buoys, known as Argos, drift along the oceans at a depth of about 6,000 feet constantly monitoring the temperature, salinity and speed of ocean currents. Every 10 days or so a bladder inflates, bringing to the surface readings taken at various depths. Once on the surface, they transmit their readings to satellites that retransmit them to land-based computers. The Argos buoys have disappointed the global warm-mongers in that they have failed to detect any signs of imminent climate change. As Dr. Josh Willis, who works for NASA in its Jet Propulsion Laboratory, noted in an interview with National Public Radio, “there has been a very slight cooling” over the buoys’ five years of observation, but that drop was “not anything really significant.” Certainly not enough to shut down the Gulf Stream.

Climate-change promoters also are perplexed by the observations of NASA’s eight weather satellites. In contrast to some 7,000 land-based stations, they take more than 300,000 temperature readings daily over the surface of the Earth. In 30 years of operation, the satellites have recorded a warming trend of just 0.14C - well within the range of normal variations. If the Argos buoys and satellites had confirmed the greenie computer models and Gore hype instead of natural temperature variations, it would have been big news. The silence speaks volumes.

Bingo - Hansen and his ilk have been playing that guestimate game for years.

You provided clear evidence of colder than "average" temps. The other side will link a guestimate report based largely upon projection of statistics.

AGW is a farce - and a very very dangerous one at that...

How can it be possible that this many record low temperatures occurred if the earth is warming every year... Is there less CO2 in the atmosphere today than yesterday???

You can't possibly be that stupid.

Well, the US is about 2% of the world's surface. What happened in the other 98
%?

July's climate: Chilly USA, torrid globe - USATODAY.com

But "Whoa Nellie" as Keith Jackson used to say. While the Northeast USA was indeed chilling out in July, take a look at these statistics, courtesy of the University of Alabama – Huntsville: For the world as a whole, July was the 2nd-warmest ever recorded, the Southern Hemisphere had its 2nd-warmest month ever (compared to seasonal norms), and it was the 2nd-warmest month ever recorded in Antarctica (again compared to seasonal norms

Second Warmest July on Record Globally, according to NASA
NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) has determined that July of 2009 was the second warmest July globally, since records were kept going back well over a hundred years.

AccuWeather.com: Global Warming News, Science, Myths, Articles

The global land-ocean temperature anomaly for July 2009 was +.60 Celsius or +1.08 F. Only July of 1998 (a strong el nino year) was warmer.

The image below shows the July 2009 anomalies across the globe (warm is red, cool is blue). Clearly the reds and oranges far outweigh the blues on this map.

NASA was around in 1909?

Exactly the answer that one would expect of a willfully ignorant ideologue such as yourself. This is a scientific subject, back up you position with some science.

You should have read the link. It says pretty clearly that there have been more record highs than record lows posted this year.

Take any stat stated globally and the number sounds pretty big. Put any stat into perspective the blood pressure drops predictably.

That's a good question, but not the right question. At least to me. I always wonder, if CO2 is the big boy in the climate change business and further, if CO2 is a homoginized gas (and it is) why are there lows in somne places and highs in others?

The obvious answer is that there are other, more powerful affectors at work all the time, everywhere.

CO2 is an interesting talking point, but time and again is shown to be less pwerful than hot air.
