How do we grow our economy once we cease to have any growth in the population? We're not there yet, but eventually we will stop growing. Economic growth, for the greatest part, is due to growth in population. What happens once that growth stops? How do we divvy up the pie then?

Your "divvy up the pie" remark belies you.

You are a parasite....You deserve no more attention than a leech, upon which I pour some salt.

For all those great wisecracks, you aren't very bright. Obviously, you lack the intelligence to understand the basic question. That is understandable based on most of your one line responses.

Try living in reality and not your silly ideology for two freakin' seconds for a change.

Basic economics has no ideology.

Saying that there is a "pie" presumes that wealth is finite and there should be someone, automatically presumed smarter than everyone else, doing the "divvying"...This flies in the face of even Keynesian voodoo economics.

That's the reality, Scooter.

First, we grow smarter, not just larger. Today, and in times past, we depended on the new generation for the ideas and new work. The idea of continued education is something that I have seen developing in my lifetime.

At the beginning of my life, the tools for this simply were not there. Small towns, and even larger towns could not afford the libraries and institutions of learning that would have been required to continue the education of the population. However, at the end of WW2, the GI Bill gave hundreds of thousands of Americans the chance at higher education that they would not have had otherwise. And our nation benefited greatly.

Today, the situation is completely differant. The net encompasses the nation. Anyone that desires education, formal or informal, has only to make the effort. Today, instead of just retiring to the coach, a man or woman can choose to enter a new field, and because of the extension of our life spans, have time to do significant work in that field. In other words, the advances of the last score of years in communications has opened a treasure chest for our nation, should we, as citizens of that nation, choose to take advantage of it.

Next, improve not only on our infrastructure, but also our eco-structure. Wisely done, we can have both dams and salmon runs. We can have both manufacturing industry and a pristine natural environment to raise our children in, and live in. That will require investment, but will also help drive the economy.

Accept that we cannot have X% of economic growth every year, but strive for X amount of an increase in the standard of living for every year. Does that sound contradictory? Consider antibiotics. That advance alone extended life expectancies by many years. Consider what a preventive Health Care System would do for the people of this nation. That would release much economic strength to be spent in other ways. Mental health resources have hardly been applied or worked on for this nation. Were we to begin to understand that as well as we understand the rest of the body, we would have a whole new percentage of citizens contributing rather than taking resources.

Rather than regarding the leveling and, eventually, the decline of the population as a disaster, it should be regarded as an opportunity. An opportunity for all to have a better life, and a better place to live in.

Stop channeling so much money to the government and let it work in the private sector. This means cutting defense spending and raising the Medicare and Social Security eligibility ages to 70 and indexing them henceforth to 9 percent of the population.

Also, stop taxing production and start taxing consumption. End income and corporate taxes and go with the Fair Tax. And carbon taxes if that tickles your fancy. Pigovian taxes.

It isn't difficult, but it is impossible. Because we have a government of people who are more interested in keeping their personal power rather than doing what's good for America.

Apparently you believe there was no economic growth or technical advances before WW II. That right there is enough to dismiss your opinions on the subject.

Persons under 18 years, percent, 2011 23.7%
It was 25.6% in 1990 according to the Population Reference Bureau.

Could it be the USA has murdered 50 million potential tax payers so a majority of people could have less then 1 hour of sexual gratification?

Every prosperous nation experiences a decline in birth rates.

Saudi Arabia has seen a 60 percent decline in its birth rate in the past 30 years, and abortion is illegal there even in cases of rape and incest. Abortion is only approved to save the life of the mother.

Along with a declining birth rate, prosperous nations also generally see a rise in immigrant labor to do those menial tasks prosperous people don't want to do.

Ah, but the wingnuts, right or left, have to find blame that is political, irregardless of what the facts are.
