Timeline: Gore election contest
November 27
Al Gore contests the November 26 vote certification in Florida, challenging results in Miami-Dade, Nassau and Palm Beach counties. The case, Gore v. Harris, is assigned to Leon County Circuit Court Judge N. Sanders Sauls.

December 2
Trial begins. Judge Sauls hears the Democrats request to overturn the state-certified election results in Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade and Nassau counties.

December 3
Trial ends after more than 22 hours of testimony and arguments.

December 4
Judge Sauls rejects Gore's contest of Florida's election results. The Gore team appeals to the Florida Supreme Court.

December 7
Florida Supreme Court hears Gore's appeal of Gore v. Harris.

December 8
Florida Supreme Court reverses Judge Sauls and orders a manual recount of the undervote, or ballots that were not counted by voting machines.

December 9
U.S. Supreme Court grants the Bush campaign's request for a stay of the Florida Supreme Court order, thereby stopping any recounts in Florida. The U.S. Supreme Court also accepts Bush's appeal of the Florida Supreme Court ruling ordering the recount. The case is named Bush v. Gore.

December 11
U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Bush v. Gore.

December 12
By a vote of 7-2, the U.S. Supreme Court finds Florida court-ordered ballot recount unconstitutional *
