2 little tickets + 1 decade = 2.17 Trillion Dollars sucked out of economy

Traffic tickets have become Big Business in the past decade, unfortunately it is a business that does NOT support the economy and only sucks money out of the economy into special pockets (Court system, Driving schools, Auto insurance Co. and other court ordered cronies).

Speeding tickets in 2003 were about 41,000,000 (41.Million)
So lets play with that number...conservatively.
Average fine $150.00 per ticket, average increase in insurance $300.00 X 3 yrs.
= $1,050.00 for ticket and 3 yrs insurance increase...OR $43,050,000,000.00 (43.05 Billion Dollars) total for 2003 speeding tickets and 3 yr Auto ins. increase.

Add to this 1,600,000 (1.6 Million) DUI's at average of $5,000.00 (fines, attorney, DUI school) = $8,000,000,000.00 (8.Billion Dollars)
Ignition Interlock at $150.00 installation, $100.00 month =$1,350.00 for first year and $1,200.00 for following 2 years..=$3,750.00 =$6,000,000,000.00 (6.Billion Dollars)
AND increased insurance for ten years at $1,000.00 per year average...= $10,000.00 X 1,600,000 =$16,000,000,000.00 (16.Billion Dollars) per year X ten years =$160,000,000,000.00
Total DUI cost for ticket and three years IID and insurance increase (10yr) for 2003 is: $174,000,000,000.00 (174. Billion Dollars)

Out of pocket expenses for Speeding and DUI tickets for 2003 (and IID and insurance increases from 5-10 years) is:

Speeding total: 43.05 Billion Dollars
DUI total : 174. Billion Dollars

$217,050,000,000.00 (217.05 Billion Dollars)

This is the same for each and every year before 2003 and after 2003, so how much has NHTSA and MADD cost the NATION in ten years for just Two Tickets at the same averages as above?
$2,170,500,000,000.00 (over 2.17 Trillion Dollars).

That is an average of 42.6 Million motorist getting speeding/DUI tickets per year and each and every year thereafter or 420.6 Million in ten years.... Ten years that is OVER our total national population of 300. Million by 120.6 Million American citizens.

NOW, we haven't even started on Reckless driving, seat belts, parking tickets, failure to yield, stop light/sign, or any of the other LITTLE tickets issued each and everyday...

How many LIVES were saved? According to FARS (NHTSA)?
(url link will not post I'm too new..LOL Fars main index... )
Since their "REPORT" only goes back to 1994... There were 36,254 fatal crashes in 1994 and ten years later in 2004 there were 38,444 fatal crashes.... a difference of 2,190 MORE in 2004....and the automobiles have become safer. HUM

NHTSA and MADD cost the nation in spendable income over 2.17 Trillion Dollars in ten years for just two of their tickets and managed to increase the fatal crashes by 2,190 fatalities.... AND redirected over 10% of Federal Highway monies AWAY from states and away from repairing bridges and levies....AS an incentive to adopt their laws...bet FEMA loved this one!!!

Plus the short/long term effects on those getting the tickets of lost jobs, homes, families, being higher CREDIT risks, higher RISK for AUTO, HEALTH, LIFE insurance. NOT spending that 2.17 Trillion dollars on Homes, NEW CARS, vacations, college educations, at Wal-mart, mom/pop corner stores or anything to support/help the economy of this nation...

I'm sure the folks in Detroit would have liked to have a little of it, as would the mortgage folks and all the other business's that have had to close from not being supported financially. The higher un-employment rates mean anything?

NOW where did that measly little 700.Billion go that broke our economies back and sent our nation into a tailspin? Ask NHTSA and MADD!

If this trend is allowed to continue, where will we be in another ten years? I seriously doubt that there will even be cardboard boxes to call home...

Just my opinion and actual facts.

Amen!

I lived in NYC for a few years and at one time had to pay $1200 in parking tickets or go to jail. I was a 'scoff-law'.

I also had to pay $600 when the City towed my car.

The fact that there is not adequate public parking in the city and that private parking is far beyond the means of most of the people doesn't matter. There is no belief that the City of New York has a responsibilty to provide a reasonable amount of public parking.

It's a huge scam. The City of NY makes billions each year!

But in the long run, having the Police steal your car and hold it for randsom cuts out the middle-men auto thieves. So I guess that it's just more efficient.

Hi Richard-H,
Unfortunately all the money paid for fines/towing etc., are NOT put back into the econcomy, but into the "feeding frenzy system".... I don't see the city, county, state saying "Hey, we collected a couple million in traffic fines this years, so we are going to build parking lots, play grounds for the kids, housing for the low income, etc..." they don't say any of that stuff, they do say we are building bigger, better jails/prisons, getting better detection equipment, better patrol cars and more officers... More to get ya with...
It is a problem that is growing by leaps and bounds, there is NOT any protection within the court system... It is simply they write them and you pay them or go to jail... and then they add on more. Self feeding monster.
Even if one half of the tickets issued over the past ten years for just the two violations that I cited had NOT been issued, our economy would have had over 1. Trillion dollars more paid into it...
It is a scam, but it is a scam that is robbing every american in one way or another...
Imo,
JGTex
