1995: George H.W. Bush Resigned Lifetime NRA Membership Over LaPierre Fanaticism

Following is the letter of resignation sent last week by former President George [H.W.] Bush to the National Rifle Association: May 3, 1995

Dear Mr. Washington,

I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on good people.

Oh I get it.

Progs think we're hive minded like they are and when leadership says anything we're supposed to obey unquestioningly.

LOLz

The NRA insanity continues. These people really need to be marginalized to the point that they have no influence on our nation.

C'mon Ray......every asshole in the media is suggesting that the NRA push to put a couple of cops in each school is insanity. If thats insanity, the whole world is upside down............which is entirely possible at this stage of the game.

George H.W. Bush resigned over LaPierre's statements that American ATF agents were jack booted thugs. Not because of the NRA's opposition to gun control. As an American politician Bush felt that the agents were good people doing a job. Since 1995 American ATF agents have proven themselves to be jack booted thugs attacking law abiding people sometimes with trumped up charges.

Frank is spot on. Conservatives don't give a crap about what so called leaders in the GOP think or parrot. We have minds of our own and don't HERD think.

They are suggesting that in lieu of removing military style weapons designed to kill vast numbers of people in a few seconds..from the mix.

Yeah..it's insanity.

Rep John Dingel coined the phrase "Jack-booted thugs", so the NRA wasn't the original source of the language. Also, Bush was defending his appointees that were under orders to the Clinton White House. Orders that they could refuse and resign over yet chose not to.

Bush was trying to put a good face on a bad situation. If you don't remember there was a time before Obama and Jimmy Carter when Presidents tried not to tarnish the image of the office. Seems Democrats don't feel the same sentiments. They regularly trash the POTUS and the United States in general with their constant condescending attitudes and frequent apologies. Bush was old-school and he felt he had to defend his office and those underneath the office. He didn't care if critics were justified.

So you are saying you are 17 years behind in the news? Did your Xbox finally die?

It was just after the Oklahoma City terrorist bombing that LaPierre said that. The rightwingers were throwing a fit that the FBI might be investigating rightwing extremists, militias, etc.,

after a rightwing terrorist attack.

Imagine that...

I love how the righties in this thread all take the "move on nothing to see here: stance when an inconvenient truth pops up.

Tim McVeigh wasn't a right wing fanatic. He was an anti government fanatic. Not caring whether that government was right or left. Today he'd be an independent.
