1961: Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine

GOVERNOR REAGAN. There you go again. [Laughter]

"When I opposed Medicare, there was another piece of legislation meeting the same problem before the Congress. I happened to favor the other piece of legislation and thought that it would be better for the senior citizens and provide better care than the one that was finally passed. I was not opposing the principle of providing care for them. I was opposing one piece of legislation as versus another."

the greatest President of my time. I heard part of that speech, how true, we will be telling our granchildren what it used to be like to be an American.

From Reagan's autobiography:

When Carter finally agreed to a debate, the date was set for October 28, one week before the election, and we were delighted. The debate went well for me and may have turned on only four little words. They popped out of my mouth after Carter claimed that I had once opposed Medicare benefits for Social Security recipients. It wasn't true and I said so: "There you go again " I think there was some pent-up anger in me over Carter's claims that I was a racist and warmonger. Just as he'd distorted my view on states' rights and arms control, he had distorted it regarding Medicare, and my response just burst out of me spontaneously. The audience loved it and I think Carter added to the impact of the words by looking a little sheepish on the television screen.

So Reagan's immortal words of there you go again were first spoken by him in defense of his support for socialized medicine.

Nothing crazy about my statement. I prefer facts to Reagan mythology. He was a supporter of socialised medicine. That is a fact.

Even though we disagree on many things (and agree on at least as many), I'm so glad to hear someone finally bring out facts against the Reagan mythology. The amount that conservatives keep repeating that Obama is the liberal messiah is nothing compared to the deification of Ronald Reagan by most conservatives.

That is true. A lot of people worship Reagan and the memory thereof. Sean Hannity is one of the worst.

I think he was a good Man who did some great things. He wasn't perfect at all. I disagree with alot of the things he did and amnesty for illegals is just one of them. He also was a Democrat before. ~BH
