A study released by the Army in June 2009 indicated that nearly as many American troops at home and abroad committed suicide in the first six months of 2006 as the number who had been killed in combat in Afghanistan during the same time period (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/…).
An average of 18 American veterans commit suicide every day (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMo…). Now, the increasingly high number of deaths among both veterans and active duty soldiers–including suicides, accidental overdose, and lethal drug interactions–have now been linked to the exponential increase in the prescribing of drugs for post traumatic stress disorder, depression and other psychological illnesses.(http://www.ahrp.org/cms/content/vie…)
Prior to the Iraq war, American soldiers in combat zones did not take psychiatric medications, according to PBS Frontline documentary The Wounded Platoon, which aired in May 2010. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/front…) But by the time of the 2007 surge more than 20,000 of our deployed troops were taking antidepressants and sleeping pills.
These drugs allowed soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder to remain in combat when they otherwise could not.

Think about the political climate in the US in 2006. Democrats like congressman Murtha and senator Kerry were calling American Soldiers "murderers and terrorists". Left wingers and the democrat party were encouraging Cindy Sheehan's radical nut cases to demonstrate against the war. Lefties bought a full page ad in the NY Times calling the commander of US Troops "betray-us". The democrat senate majority leader was telling the Troops that the "war in Iraq is lost". If senator Harry Reid was arrested and charged with treason the moment he tried to influence the morale of the Troops and Americans with the lie that "the war in Iraq was lost" it might have lowered the suicide rate.

i think the troops accept that, maybe even better than civilians do

as to drugs, it's getting mighty hard to a schoolkid or senior who's dodged that bullet

as an aside, talked to an older sparky today, a dav. He's on 100% disability

and you know why?

because he got uppity , and told the VA to stuff thier drugs where the sun don't shine....

The statistics are based on 2006 and I ain't gonna let it go. The poilitical climate at that time engineered by democrats was designed to ruin the morale of the US Serviceman. Many civilian Soldiers reservists were deployed and their families saw left wing propaganda designed by democrats to hurt their morale. It was the first time in history that a senate majority leader would tell the wives and families of American Soldiers that "the war in Iraq was lost". How did that impact letters and E-mails and the morale of the Troops? Harry Reid should have been arrested.
