138 Repubs voted against Violence against Women act

Places women at greater risk of violence
Promotes overly-aggressive law enforcement policies
Silences women’s voices
Promotes couple break-up, not reconciliation
Ignores the needs of abusive women
VAWA turns law-abiding citizens into criminals
Makes it harder for real victims to get the help they need

Maybe this is some reasons why
Geezus, talk about war on women

Once again, Republicans assemble their circular firing squad

This bill was a no brainer and received near unanimous bipartisan support previously. What do Republicans gain by voting No? They knew the bill was going to pass, they knew Democrats were beating them over the head on womens issues, they had nothing to gain and everything to lose

Yet, they can't help being the party of stupid

It's hard to follow your rationale since you post them as bumper stickers rather than cohesive arguments. How does VAWA place women at greater risk of violence? Give us some fact based reasons, and we'll move on from there.

Tea Party Republicans were not sent to Washington to legislate. They were sent to posture and obstruct. As they are ideologically driven, they have no means of working in a system like Congress that demands legislative action via compromise.

Restraining orders have been concluded as "often ineffective" which gives women a false sense of security
Women who have experienced inflexible mandatory arrest laws are far less likely to request police assistance.
One DoJ-funded study concludes, “Increases in the willingness of prosecutors’ offices to take cases of protection order violation were associated with increases in the homicide of white married intimates, black unmarried intimates, and white unmarried females.”
One National Institute of Justice report warns,
We do not know whether no-drop increases victim safety or places the victims in greater jeopardy

VAWA is just another victimization law to try and win votes for the Democratic Party. The stupid and ignorant will naturally fall for it as always.

What did the majority of the studies say about the effectiveness of the VAWA? The examples you cite, while valid (thank you) speak of 'One DoJ-funded study' and 'One National Institute of Justice report'. This leads readers to conclude that there were many studies and those studies, perhaps, spoke of the efficacy of the legislation rather than a few presumed short comings.

And wouldn't it make for a more effective piece of legislation if those presumed short comings were properly addressed and corrected? Would it be responsible to throw the baby out with the bath water?

I don't think it has much to do with the war on women by the right. My best guess is that all 138 members who voted no did so because they were told to do so, knowing if they did not vote the way they were told the RNC would withhold funding or run a more pliable candidate against them in 2014.

This in no way means that no war on women exists, one needs to look to the vile and vulgar attacks on Sandra Fluke by cowardly misogynist members of the GOP to understand its existence.

Here's what I know about VAWA:

"I wrote VAWA Grants, managed them and worked with Judges, DA's, probation, parole, US Marshall's, local institutions, legal aid and women's shelters. My deputies worked up close and personal with offenders and victims and treatment providers. VAWA provided funds and training to create collaborations which saved lives; we locked up dangerous and unstable offenders, enabled victims to obtain services necessary to keep them and their children safe; we enforced protective orders, aided PO's in the enforcement of search and seizure orders and made bench warrants an immediate priority when an offender violated court orders."***

*** posted on another thread.

According to a Harvard University study, when states enact mandatory arrest policies, the intimate partner homicide rate increases by 57%
