13-Year-Old Looks at Trees, Makes Solar Power Breakthrough

Poor kid likely will flunk out due to failing in one or more of:

1. Food (pyramid)(platter) studies.

2. Presidential Physical Fitness Training.

3. Socialist indoctrination.

He oughta give up on plans for college and start a business - in some other country.

Yea, the Republican Doctrine "Give up on college". Because "college bad".

So, another advocate of The Democrap Mantra:

Jobs bad.

Welfare good.

I heard Republicans accuse Democrats of saying that, but I never heard a Democrat say it.

How about "science is a faith, evolution a lie, climate change a conspiracy and education just a piece of paper". Now I've heard Republicans say those things over and over again.

And reality kicks rderp's ass once again.

The numbers are so skewed because all those Bible colleges giving out degrees in "Bible Memorization". Besides wipe your ass with it, name a single thing they are good for.

The kid, as often happens when you are 13, was wrong. Yet you think that his education is helping him, even though his teachers did not see the fundamental error he made.

Education doesn't help anyone. I learned that from Republicans. Look at you.

Exactly, you thought that you could take a solar panel, point it away from the sun, and put it in the shade, and it would generate more power than one pointed at the sun and in bright sunlight. Education obviously did not help you, the young man who had this idea, his teachers, or the reporters who bought into the hype.

The strange thing is, the American Museum of Natural History never said anything about the viability of this project for making electricity, they liked it because it showed how trees are able to get a benefit even indirect sunlight. They focused on what the project said about trees, and all the educated people thought it was about solar power.

I knew you'd trot out that lie again. Let's examine it, shall we?

Per this, there are 137 Bible colleges in the US. Per this, there are 4,352 institutions of higher learning. Subtract the Bible colleges, and you have 4,215 secular colleges and universities.

Are you really claiming that 3% of colleges and universities give out more diplomas than the other 97% combined?

And reality kicks rderp's ass once again.

RDean:

Give 'em hell kiddo.. You've got him pinned now...

____________________________

I was gonna say that possibly the teacher KNEW of the problems with the kid's theory and elected to do what I learned that all good engineering mgrs do --

1) Don't tell your folks that what your asking them to has been proven impossible.

2) Bite your tongue when you see obvious errors in their plan to solve the impossible.

The AMOUNT of learning that went on is the key. Thrashing your innovative people with every percieved "error" at every opportunity ain't good talent management. What SHOULD have happened, was once the basic idea was in testing -- the teacher SHOULD have suggested a better test methodology. But the details of measuring power output from multiple solar panels is NOT in the expected skill set of grade school teachers anyway..

Turns out that his general concept of stacking panels might have some application for those SOLAR THERMAL mirrored behemoths out there.

Carry on..

And the winner by knockout, and continued reigning USMB Champion...DAVEMAN.

<and the crowd goes wild>

I'm out of rep...but I'll hit you up tomorrow.

13-Year-Old Looks at Trees, Makes Solar Power Breakthrough - Technology - The Atlantic Wire

Aidan Dwyer did a much better job on his 7th grade science project than any of us. While on a wintertime hike in the Catskills, he noticed the branches of trees held a spiral pattern as they ascended. He wondered if that could possibly serve some purpose, looked into it, and learned about the Fibonacci sequence, which is a mathematical way of describing a spiral. Then he studied tree branches more closely and found their leaves adhered to the sequence. Then he figured out that if he arranged solar panels the way an oak tree arranged its leaves, they were 20 to 50 percent more efficient than the standard straight-line solar arrays. That is why the American Museum of Natural History gave him a Young Naturalist award, and published his findings on its website.
As the article says, not too shabby for a kid who hasn't even started high school yet.

So the arraignment of leaves on a tree follow the Fibonacci sequence, resulting in optimum efficiency.

Wow, one might almost imagine that there was an intelligence behind their design...:eusa_whistle:

Yes....trees are very smart

You should be embarrassed on so many levels for this.

How's that "the Republicans are so intolerant!" working out for you?

Did you forget you hate science.

your sides take is he should be educated at a religious school so he can learn about intelligent design instead of real sceince.

Actually, I see it in action all over this board. In fact, if this board is a microcosm of the Republican party? Y'all are screwed six ways from Sunday.

I'm not a Republican. This post is a prime example of what's wrong with USMB (on all sides). You assume and box people in, based upon one post. Especially a post where I don't even state any of my personal views, and don't even hint whatsoever that I'm a Republican. Nice try though.

Your behaviors and attitudes betray you, sir.

Good come back! A one liner obviously meant to be a deflection, that doesn't address what I brought up whatsoever. Great point! You really got me!

PS-I've only voted Republican once (Charlie Crist). But try again!:lol:
