Brother, Can Ya’ Spare a Dime?

Here’s a statistical comparison that you will not – repeat: not – see anywhere in the liberal media:

May 10, 1997

The prior month’s initial jobless claims = 1,312,000.
Employed workforce = 129.464 million.
New jobless claims as a share of the employed workforce = 1.01 percent.

On the other hand, there’s this:

May 7, 2005

The prior month’s initial jobless claims = 1,296,000.
Employed workforce = 141.099 million (as of April 2005).
New jobless claims as a share of the employed workforce = 0.92 percent.

Yeah, that’s right, there are 11.635 million more jobs, right now, when compared to May 1997.

Wow you'd think the economy would be rolling then. I mean gas prices go up $.20 in a week and people dont bat an eye about paying it. They must be making enough to cover it.

If you hadn't posted this information, Jeff, I wouldn't have known about it. We keep hearing about how the economy is in a slump, but have you ever been to the malls on a weekend, or gone out to eat and had to wait almost two hours to be seated? And as Insein mentioned, they keep buying gas, regardless of the price. Maybe we'll see the effects of the "slump" in a month or so, but right now I sure don't see any evidence of it.

I read somewhere that last months numbers may be the pinnacle and it will start to drop off over the summer.

I think I read that every three months during the 90's as well. The only way we will know is if it happens.

Another one without a sense of humor...are you related to Mr.P and Kathyanne?

I have a sense of humor when humor is presented.

BTW, your spelling of Kathianne is pretty funny.

Either spelling is correct...she uses the i I prefer the y....

She dinged me again for 9 points because I used a little humor and spelled her name Kathyanne...go figure!
