Jay Leno is known to have quite the car collection – around 100 in all, not including 90 motorcycles – but until recently, he didn’t own an electric vehicle! But after publically claiming skepticism about the cleaner cars, the late night host has announced his love for his 2011 Chevrolet Volt. In fact, since December of last year, Leno has used his Volt to drive the 35 mile commute from his home in Burbank to work, racking up around 11,000 miles – all without ever visiting a gas tank!

When offered the first 2011 Chevy Volt, Leno politely replied “no”- but later was among the first buyers when the electric vehicle went to the consumer market. Since the Volt’s full charge has an electric driving range of around 38 to 48 miles, Leno makes his 35 mile trip to work each day powered only by the electric battery. The Volt is then plugged in upon arrival to the studio lot, giving the car a full charge for the ride home.

Leno’s Volt was delivered after purchase with a half tank of gas, which still remains in the vehicle.

How is the electricity produced that charges the extremely expensive batteries in this very expensive toy car.
I drive electric vehicles every day where I work, summer heat effects the range of the batteries and winter cold is even worse. Our vehicles are the simplest vehicles beside golf carts........ baggage tugs at the airport. People are constantly leaving them on, a lot of the times with their lights on, the stupid public. If electric vehicles ever take off, buy a tow company specializing in towing electric cars, you'll make a fortune.

Your golf carts are powered by lead acid batteries. A technology that is over 100 years old. Present batteries have far more power. And the ones coming down the pike will have an order of magnitude more power density yet.

You get plenty of people that run their cars out of gas, you will get the same that run their cars batteries dry.

Why is it you people are so dead set against any new technology? Are you that afraid of change?

Yeah but those Chevy Volts are gay...........98 out of 100 American males would much prefer this............

Most environmentalist guys dont recognize that there is a whole car culture out there of tens of millions. The tuner industry alone is a multi-billion dollar industry.........and thats just foreign cars like Honda's, Subaru's and Mitsubishi's etc..........which is going nowhere soon and certainly not in our lifetimes.

Take a guess what the operative word is above...........

Only groups like the environmental folks think you can go into Chinatown and have a real successful burger business!!!:coffee:

What are you driving Chris? How about you Rocks? Tell the truth now, we all want to know what gas saving, non polluting wonder you guys have invested in. What is your electricity bill?

The truth is I am driving standard ICE rigs. Before I buy another rig, I have to buy my retirement home. When that is settled, then I will make a list of requirements for what I need in the way of transportation, and buy what fills that list best at the most economical price of operation and initial cost.

Am I supposed to be impressed that a rich guy who only drives his volt back and forth to work, and has a contract that gives him a charging station in his parking spot, has managed not to use any gas in his toy car?

Anybody think Leno is afraid he will run out of voltage? He probably has a support organization that rivals NASCAR? What was he compensated for his twenty second Volt plug? Probably more than the average American makes in a year. When desperate lefties start quoting Hollywood types you know they are in trouble.

Hmmm........ET of 10.2, and street legal and easy to drive on the street. How many ICE's that do 10.2 can be driven on the street.

Steve, even in my lifetime, the EVs are going to make the ICEs look like slugs. And they will drive 8 to 10 second rigs to the strip, not trailer them. All they will do is change tires that are on the trailer they are towing.

169 miles - No Sweat!

We're getting ready to sit down for a Santa Maria BBQ at Sharon and Robert's home in Federal Way, having arrived in the Zombie about an hour ago...169 miles, no sweat! Of course, we got in two oportunity recharges, but it's still great to leave the trailer behind.

The Zombie seems to be happy switching roles from 10 second drag car to interstate freeway cruiser. The EVision system boldy reported all traction and 12V system while logging the data, the Bruce Sherry Designs/Manzanita MicroTouch screen bus display dash meter kept the cells monitored, the Siamese 9 motor ran flawlessly, the Zilla thought it was on vacation, and the Dow Kokam cells cranked out steady power mile after mile, town after town!

The last leg of the trip was a 66 mile run, with the cells still hanging at 3.45V under load on arrival to Federal Way... about 40 percent capacity remaining.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

American built 1998 Camry with 233,000 miles....four cylinder.

I paid $3,600 for it 5 years ago.

You are kinda right and kinda wrong at the same time. The volt and current electric cars and hybrids are not going to be huge, but Tesla's cars draw rave reviews, and all real cars guys want one or wish they could have one. Electric cars have a lot to offer over standard gas run vehicles, but they also have their disadvantages too.
The one thing that always blows peoples heads away about the Tesla roadster was their number one sell point. During the test drive the dealer would get into the drivers seat and the potential buyer into the passenger seat. The dealer would then tell the passenger to turn up the radio, and at the same time would floor it.
The car accelerates so fast, that it is impossible to move your hand forward to turn up the radio.

He's had to use the equivalent of 23,000 miles of carbon production to get it with the inefficiencies of electric power line transmission and the fact that he has to get his power from fossil fuels, but as a meaningless, wasteful, feel-good demonstration it's great!

At an estimated cost of 150,000 to put together, I would expect EVERY SINGLE ICE powered vehicle could beat that time. For one third the cost. I find it amusing that you folks never take cost into consideration, never! For someone who claims to be a MENSA BOY to ignore simple concepts like that is remarkable.

Tesla cars do not draw rave reviews from car people, they draw rave reviews from environmentalists who believe the hype. The actual, real world, performance of Tesla cars does not get a 200 mile range, the company is hemorrhaging money, and the cars suck. Getting acceleration out of a car is nothing new. I used to tape a $100 dollar bill to my dash and tell anyone who got in the car they could have it if they could reach it. I never lost it. Acceleration does not impress me, being able to get on a track and go more than 60 miles without recharging does.

Agreed. The Tesla is doomed now that Merc has gotten into the game. The difference being the Tesla is made by a bunch of enviro wonks and the Merc E-Cell AMG is made by CAR people. It is more expensive then the Tesla but they make up for that by being a better damned car, by a mile.

yup......and its got fake exhaust sounds = gay. No car guy wants an electric car. Car guys........and there are tens of millions of them........like the visceral experience a Tesla can never deliver.
