As we celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of St George’s Caye, let’s not forget the true reason we celebrate. We must remember that had those brave men and women back in 1798 decided to abandon the settlement, there would be no Belize and no reason to CELEBRATE. Those brave brave 14 men who paddled overnight from Flowers Bank to take part and vote in that all important Public Meeting should be given a special place in all of our hearts.

The Baymen called a public meeting for 1 June 1797. At this meeting, because the Flowers Bank 14 had arrived in time to unlock a 51 to 51 tie as to whether to stay and defend the territory against and impending Spanish invasion or to abandon. In the end they voted 65 to 51 to defend the settlement.

The people of Belize then referred to as the settlement of British Honduras stayed and defended the settlement and drove back the Spaniards on the 10th September. The rest is history.
