100 residents to be selected for basic income pilot program in Cal city

Foooodida is not much better. Shitholes all of em. Stockton is far better city than anything in the south.

Your desperation is duly noted! You're simply a troll, simply a troll. Unlike some here, you're not even amusing.

Florida is in the top five fiscally responsible states in the country. Where is California? Number 43 out of 50.

Some on the left are for equal protection of the law regarding the legal concept of employment at will. Solving for Capitalism's natural rate of unemployment in a market friendly manner, promotes the general welfare of our economy and general prosperity.
How does a market controlled by those who own the means of production promote the general welfare when automation blurs the lines between the three types of unemployment?

why should it matter? Employment is at the will of either party. Some may choose to not work, but do something else. Only Capital Must circulate under Capitalism.
Capital's circulation is controlled by the financial forces of corporate globalism, leaving less and less room for national governments to shape the economic environment within which their labor and capital operate.

solving for simple poverty can ameliorate that.

Poverty is impossible to eradicate. In our country, and most others, it is a mathematical calculation. Already our population below our poverty level are among the richest people in the world.

Further Resources on Poverty Measurement, Poverty Lines, and Their History
Solving simple poverty due merely to a lack of gainful employment could happen automatically. Only Poor cannot be solved for under Capitalism since it is a capital metric.

This is going to be interesting. This is just a trial to see what happens. This city is about 30 minutes from me and I applaud them trying out various things to reduce poverty and the stress it brings.

"A team of independent researchers will pick 100 people to receive the money. The purpose is to study how an extra $500 a month impacts people’s health and stress level. Researchers are also looking to see if people feel financially secure."

If you want to reduce poverty, encourage teenagers to stop having babies without husbands and fathers, stay in highschool and get a diploma, don't get arrested, and get a job, any job...that is how you actually stop poverty.....then you cut taxes so businesses can hire those people....and you make sure the police can keep people safe.....you tell the democrats to stop letting violent criminals out of jail....
Compensation for capitalism's natural rate of unemployment does that, not means testing for welfare.

Capitalism has a success rate....socialism has a mass murder rate....
lol. taking capital credit for our mixed market economy that is Commanded by Congress and the Fed?

STFU you drooling moron. You just want free money for an occasional trip to the washy washy to get your marbles off.

Make more money and something out of yourself, douchebag.
we don't want the washy washy girls to get laid off.

Pacific Research Institute | Basic Income Comes to Stockton

"Just six years after declaring bankruptcy due to a 15-year spending binge, Stockton is now exploring creative new ways of spending again. This time, it’s a one-year experiment to give several dozen Stockton families $500 a month, with no strings attached.

"The idea of 'universal basic income' – providing everyone with a monthly income without any obligations or restrictions – is gathering momentum in Europe and is now here in the U.S.

"Among its biggest champions are Silicon Valley titans, including Mark Zuckerberg, Marc Andressen, and Elon Musk.

"They argue that the coming robot revolution (related: Anaya wants a Roomba) is expected to eliminate millions of jobs.

"A basic income, according to tech’s best minds, is a simple and elegant solution.

"Closer to philosophical home, some libertarians, including Charles Murray, believe that a basic income would dramatically reduce the enormous bureaucracy currently administering America’s entitlement programs.

"AFDC, Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, and unemployment benefits would all go away, and more important, each person would decide how best to spend the money.

"Murray, however, does acknowledge: 'Yes, some people will idle away their lives …. But that is already a problem. The question isn’t whether a UBI will discourage work, but whether it will make the existing problem significantly worse. I don’t think it would.'"

The idea of a state-run basic income for all citizens dates to the early 16th century, but at an estimated $3.8 trillion per year, is it likely to happen here and now?

It's efficacy seems to depend on the existence of a Value Added Tax which is conspicuously missing in the US?

Value-added tax - Wikipedia

"VAT raises about a fifth of total tax revenues both worldwide and among the members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD).[1]:14 As of 2018, 166 of the world's approximately 193 countries employ a VAT, including all OECD members except the United States,[1]:14 which uses a sales tax system instead."

It didn't work in Finland......

Finland to end basic income trial after two years

Europe’s first national government-backed experiment in giving citizens free cash will end next year after Finland decided not to extend its widely publicised basic income trial and to explore alternative welfare schemes instead.

Finland's failed universal basic income experiment should be a lesson for U.S.

Critics say it would have required a 30 percent tax increase on an already over-taxed population to be viable.

The idea of UBI – appealing both to the left, which hopes it can cut poverty and inequality, and to the right, which sees it as a possible route to a leaner, less bureaucratic welfare system – has gained traction recently amid predictions that automation could threaten up to a third of current jobs.

Some Americans ( a fraction of the richest one percent) could well afford a 300 percent tax increase:

How would we pay for Universal Basic Income? - Andrew Yang for President

"How would we pay for Universal Basic Income?

"It would be easier than you might think. Andrew proposes funding UBI by consolidating some welfare programs and implementing a Value-Added Tax (VAT) of 10%.

"Current welfare and social program beneficiaries would be given a choice between their current benefits or $1,000 cash unconditionally – most would prefer cash with no restriction.

"A Value-Added Tax (VAT) is a tax on the production of goods or services a business produces.

"It is a fair tax and it makes it much harder for large corporations, who are experts at hiding profits and income, to avoid paying their fair share.

"A VAT is nothing new.

"160 out of 193 countries in the world already have a Value-Added Tax or something similar, including all of Europe which has an average VAT of 20 percent."

Taking money out of the economy to put some back in is as useful as trying to fill a swimming pool by pumping water from the deep end into the shallow end.

Giving people money for doing nothing is morally wrong.
Another way of looking at your concern would be to point out a basic income would give people the freedom to contribute to society in ways they can not currently do. Think of the basic income as a safety net that can replace many of our current welfare policies.
