When one looks at the posts by our Liberal pals, one regularly sees references which boil down to "I just wish you'd shut up and go away."
This is not casual, nor idiomatic..... it is the desire not to hear the arguments of the Right.
And....with good reason: in the market place of ides, the Right devastates the Left.
The following, based on a Dennis Prager lecture, proves the point.
1. The bigger the government, the less citizens do for one another. Legions of volunteer groups will do it if the government doesn't. Obama wants to reduce the charitable deduction. Americans at the same level of income and status give far more charity and volunteer far more in every way than Western Europeans.
a. "Last year Americans gave $300 billion to charity. To put this into perspective, that is almost twice what we spent on consumer electronics equipment—equipment including cell phones, iPods and DVD players. Americans gave three times as much to charity last year as we spent on gambling and ten times as much as we spent on professional sports. America is by far the most charitable country in the world. There is no other country that comes close."

c. In "Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital," (1995) Robert Putnam surveys the decline of "social capital" in the United States of America since 1950. He has described the reduction in all the forms of in-person social intercourse upon which Americans used to found, educate, and enrich the fabric of their social lives. Putnam describes at least half of all associational memberships as church related, half of all philanthropy as religious in character, and half of all volunteering occurs in a religious context- including contributions to secular causes.
This decline is due to the growth of big government, and policies of same which pressure against volunteerism.
Massachusetts and Illinois have essentially ended the adoption programs of Catholic Charities.
2. The Welfare State is a Ponzi Scheme. (So says economist Lawrence Kudlow.)
Ponzi himself was the quintessential Liberal: meant well, but created something destructive.
Same story for California....broke. Can anyone argue that it was conservatives who caused it?
a. Where does the money come from to support ever-increasing government?
We borrow it.
" .... interest rates are lower than they have ever been. But eventually it will come to a crashing end—as all Ponzi schemes ultimately do. America spends about $220 billion per year on interest.
"But interest rates are being artificially suppressed by Federal Reserve money printing. Eventually, rates will be forced to rise. Right now the benchmark interest rate in the U.S. is a quarter of 1 percent—nearly zero. What if it returns to 6 percent like it was about a decade ago? All of a sudden America will be paying $1 trillion per year in interest! That is more than a quarter of America’s total budget. And all of this would come at a time when Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security costs are skyrocketing."

3. Citizens of the Liberal State become increasingly narcissistic. Compare America to the model Liberals have for America: Western Europe.
America, and Americans worry about others. 37 thousand Americans died saving South Korea from becoming North Korea. How many Germans did? French?
No....their biggest concern is how much vacation time they get. ....or the age of retirement in Europe.

b. "...the European Union confuses the issue by declaring, "traveling a human right." That's right, we can now add traveling to the list directly behind the right to universal health care."

4. The Liberal Welfare State causes people to distain work, efforts of various kinds. According to one listener, in Germany, if you own a store, and desire to stay open an extra hour....you cannot: it is unfair to your competitor. Harder work to get ahead? Out of the question.
This even applies to having children: nations of Western Europe are declining in population.
a. Religious folk have more children than Liberal secular folk. Ever see a family with nine kids and the folks are Democratic activists?
b. "Europeans, Turks and Iranians, by contrast, have very few children because they are grumpy, alienated and pessimistic. It's not so much the projection of the demographic future cranked out by the United Nations computers that counts, but rather the implicit vision of the future in the minds of today's prospective parents.

5. Nothing is more character-eroding than getting something for nothing.
47% of Americans do not pay any federal income tax.
I suspect that there is more wisdom in the Bible than in the NYTimes. In the former we find that every Israelite gave half a shekel: if too poor, they borrowed it. Without contributing, one has no dignity. And this is part of the divide: for Liberals, equality is important, but dignity isn't. That's why they can vote for a rapist, for a killer, for a failure.
a. The paradox is that Jews are Liberal. They live conservative lives- education is foremost, they marry, they are frugal, work hard, defer pleasure....they should preach what they practice.
b. Charles Murray makes a similar point in "Coming Apart," laying the blame for disintegrating societal values on the Liberal elites who behave in a conservative manner but endorse behavior that hurts the lower socio-economic class.
'.... societal attitude has been the “ecumenical niceness”…don’t fight, share toys, take turns….and never, ever be judgmental. As a result, the upper cultural class, which has stabilized by returning to more traditional ways, survives, yet these individuals will not criticize the behaviors which are destroying the lower cultural class.
