More evidence has emerged that geothermal heat and volcanic activity beneath the ice sheet of West Antarctica is contributing to the melting of the Thwaites Glacier, the large, rapidly changing outlet of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Yes, and it's been the same geothermal heat level for millions of year.

The paper said nothing about increased geothermal heat causing glaciers to melt faster. It just said the geothermal contribution to melt has been underestimated in that spot in past models.

So why are your trying to pretend it's talking about a new volcano melting glaciers? Is it deliberate dishonesty on your part, or are you just incapable of reading?

If glaciers suddenly started melting more from volcanoes, those new volcanoes would be plainly visible, as it would take many huge eruptions to melt that much ice. And those eruptions could easily be detected. So where are they?

Iceland. Recently. One of the biggest lava eruptions in recorded history. Right next to a glacier. And the effect on the glacier was ... nada. If the eruption had happened directly under the glacier, it would have been different, but just erupting nearby has no effect. You need a massive eruption directly under a glacier to melt significant ice. And such massive eruptions can't be hidden.

As the ice shelf thins, the point where the glacier starts to float will retreat, raising the sea level, and exposing more ice to the ocean, said the study's lead author, Jamin Greenbaum, a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics. If a volcano erupts under a small glacier it will melt, just as Mount St Helen's did. IF we had a VEI 8 happen under the Antarctic glaciers they too would melt but much would be vaporized into our atmosphere mixed with ash. this would be a very bad thing for the earth short term and man in general as it would most certainly herald the beginning of the next ice age..
