Employment rate by country. The statistics shows that 1 out of 3 americans are not working. Even Russia beats USA when it comes to employment. So 1 out 3 americans are on diffrent welfare or government funded programs. Is that to many, should more americans be working? Look to Canada, Norway,Iceland and Switzerland why are they having more people employed?

1. Switzerland:78.6%
2.Iceland:78.2%
3. Norway:75.3%
10 Canada:71.5%
12 United Kingdom: 69.5%
13 Russia 67.4%
16 USA 66.7%

I think Russia's numbers must be including child prostitution.

Democrats tell us that unemployment stimulates the economy, so the bigger the unemployment the more stimulus.

we are actually even lower than that shows. Currently our participation rate is 63.5%, or of population to employment it is 58.3%
When Bush left office in January, 2009, it was 65.5% and 60.5% respectively.

Are you saying we have 33% unemployment?

(the proportion of working age adults employed, here with working age between 15 and 64 years old)

does that include self employed or employed on a salary?

if unemployment is 8.1% US Labour Statistics - then employed would be 91.9%

16 USA 66.7% (Employment Rate)

not even WingNuts claim unemployment at 33.3%, much less any credible statistic ....

RUSH: And I know that 88 million Americans are not working but they're eating, and it's a statistic that worries me.
It's quite telling that 88 million are not working but they're eating.

they figure the rate on population. Actually unemployed is at 8.1%, but that does not include those that have not looked in the last 30 days or have given up looking all together. Currently the number of unemployed that are counted, sits at 12.5 million and those marginally employed and looking for full time is 15.7 million totally 28.2 million. Once again these numbers do not include those that have given up looking for 30 days or more. Thus, if you include everyone the number is actually much higher.

The CON$ervoFascist Brotherhood always make up their own stats.

Those working part time but want full time are 8 million not 15.7 million, and discouraged workers are less than 1 million for a total of about 21 million, not 28.2 million + discouraged workers you were too gutless to put a number to. You do get the record for greatest exaggeration, beating out John Senunu's 27 million.

4 years after the fact and to still have so many Americans not working and Obama with a lead.
WTF is wrong with people

My parents are 73 years old & still hold a job & do farm work 7 days a week. Most workplaces are handy-cap accessible with their own parking spaces & ADA spec bathrooms. I like many others held a job & worked my way through college.

All those 20-40year government pensions should be banned. Government backed defined benefit pension plans should be illegal.

Your own link confirms my numbers. Show where the other 7 million + you claimed come from.

The unemployment rate edged down in August to 8.1 percent. Since the beginning of this year, the rate
has held in a narrow range of 8.1 to 8.3 percent. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.5 million,
was little changed in August. (See table A-1.)

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as
involuntary part-time workers) was little changed at 8.0 million in August. These individuals were
working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time
job. (See table A-8.)

Among the marginally attached, there were 844,000 discouraged workers in August, a decline of
133,000 from a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons
not currently looking for work because they believe no jobs are available for them. The remaining 1.7
million persons marginally attached to the labor force in August had not searched for work in the 4
weeks preceding the survey for reasons such as school attendance or family responsibilities. (See
table A-16.)
