The number of recipients drawing benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, has hit an all-time high, with a record 46.7 million Americans now benefiting from the program. Participation in SNAP has been greater than 46 million all year, as unemployment remains persistently above the 8-percent mark.

Food-stamp spending has more than doubled during President Obama’s tenure to a record $75.7 billion in the fiscal year that ended September 2011. Spending on SNAP totaled $6.2 billion this June, nearly half a percent higher than May and 2.8 percent more than in June 2011.

“For many in the Silent Generation, relying on ‘welfare’ or any type of public assistance is not acceptable,” one mini-script asserts. “This generation of ‘self-sacrifice’ was raised to be independent and self-reliant. They don’t want to ‘lose face’ in front of their peers.”

All in all, spending on the welfare program has boosted 100 percent since Obama took office, and now a startling one in seven Americans receives the benefits. Comparatively, in the 1970s, only one out of every 50 Americans was benefiting from the program

I can't post links yet I guess, but google it. Article came out yesterday. Need to get people off these programs that abuse it and get them working.

How many are abusing?

How many able bodied adult Americans refuse an available job and instead opt to live off of federal tax dollars? What percentage of our GDP is spent on these lazy miscreants?

Thanks in advance for your kind attention.

Relying on government by spending food stamps and welfare etc on drugs, ipad's, brand new car etc. People are abusing the system and it's getting worse. It needs to be changed.

I think if you're unemployed and not looking for work, they should either have to make them work on public works projects or send them to school to be re-trained for a job the market needs. Otherwise, kick them off the system.

People are suffering and relying more on government help during a recession? I'm shocked.

The economy is not in recession. Under Obama's failed leadership this stagnant economy is becoming the new norm. That's why so many voters are hoping for a change of leadership on Nov. 2, the 2012 version of hope and change.

From my own life Exp I would guess that at least half of the people collection Food Stamps are Abusing the System, or at the very least using the help to pay for food, so they can spend their own money on Frivolous BS, or a Drug Habit. I have seen to many people abusing the system in one way or another to have any faith it's anything less than half.

Like I said, I like the program and I think it's a huge help to people who need it, but way too many people are abusing the system. It needs to be re-worked.

It has been reworked and reformed and there is still some abuse, but no one is buying Cadillacs and few could even manage ipads with the money because the food stamp allotments are just not great enough and the (illegal) transaction costs of converting food stamps into cash are so high that most people who abuse food stamps are probably doing so just to buy cigarettes or whiskey because they feel they just can't do without these things. Before we invest in trying to cut out this abuse, we should see a dollar and cents assessment of how much food stamp abuse is going on and how much it would cost us to try to reduce it. Or maybe we should consider that anyone poor enough to need food stamps might need a shot of whiskey or a cigarette once in a while just to cope with life.

Nice ideas. You sound like a liberal.

We have many people abusing the system and a lot getting around the system by getting on Social Security Disability. It is much easier to get now with all these attorneys helping since they get a piece of the pie now..

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A criminal swindle of the nation's $64.7 billion food stamp program is playing out at small neighborhood stores around the country, where thousands of retailers are suspected of trading deals with customers, exchanging lesser amounts of cash for their stamps.

Authorities say the stamps are then redeemed as usual by the unscrupulous merchants at face value, netting them huge profits and diverting as much as $330 million in taxpayer funds annually. But the transactions are electronically recorded and federal investigators, wise to the practice, are closely monitoring thousands of convenience stories and mom-and-pop groceries in a push to halt the fraud.

Known as food stamp trafficking, the illegal buying or selling of food stamps is a federal offense that has resulted in 597 convictions nationwide and $197.4 million in fines, restitution and forfeiture orders, over the past three years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of the Inspector General. The USDA last month awarded a 10-year contract worth up to $25 million to Fairfax, Va.-based SRA International, Inc., to step up the technology used to combat fraud.

"It's misuse of the program. It's a misuse of taxpayer dollars at a tough time. Not only the people who need the program are having a tough time, but the people who are paying for the program are having a tough time, too," said Kevin Concannon, USDA Undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services.

The fraud is almost always found among the 199,000 smaller stores that process 15 percent of the nation's total food stamp transactions, Concannon said.
