Bike trail will run through rattlesnake habitat

WHEELING, Ill. • The site selected for a Chicago-area bike-pedestrian path is adjacent to a nest of now-hibernating eastern massasauga rattlesnakes.

The city of Wheeling is planning to build a paved bike and pedestrian path from the Des Plaines River to an Interstate 294 overpass. The path, to cost $1.2 million, will connect with other bicycle paths in the area. Construction will start in spring 2012 and wrap up that fall. Until then, several state agencies are deciding what to do about the snakes. The Wheeling Village Board recently hired an environmental consultant for about $25,000 to study the area.

They have rattlesnakes in Illinois? I thought they were warm weather creatures.

Who knew?

Illinois' Venomous Creatures Strike Back

Snakes

While there are numerous venomous creatures in Illinois, snakes are the best knownand least likely to bite you. To gauge a better understanding of snakebite rarity, you should know that nationwide only 2,000 people are bitten per year by venomous snakes, and less than 14 actually die. Face it, a snakebite seldom occurs, and when it does, it's usually because the snake was picked up, cornered or stepped on.

All the snakes in the Cook County democrat political machine, and people around there are worried about a few little Massasaugas (that's "Pygmy Rattlesnakes", for those who don't know)? Good Lord, those are practically non-poisonous, when compared to what people in Cook County are used to dealing with every day-snakes of the political sort, which are far more aggressive, and quite a bit more venomous.
