Rep Power: 3 | | | Is Obama incompetent or purposely ruining the economy??? When business is way way down, why would you slow it down even further by increasing government spending which ultimately means higher taxes? If you take money out of the consumer pockets, there is less spending and a slower economy. If you tax business with things like a "wind fall profit tax" against oil, they will explore less and oil prices will increase. If you socialize medicine and try to cap profits on pharmaceutical companies, you will decrease incentive to invest in cures in things like cancer. Is Obama a moron or is purposely trying to ruin the economy for his socialist agenda????????????? |

Rep Power: 113 | | | He's not incompetent. He's also not ruining the economy.
Right now there's not a whole lot of difference between the Obama administration and the last four years of Bush's. This is mainly because you have the same Congress. Congress has the purse strings, the POTUS does not. The POTUS actually has very little power. Too much credit is given to the POTUS when something works and things are good, and way too much blame is placed on him/her when it doesn't and things are "bad."
Right now it looks to me like Obama is walking an ever-thinning tightrope while juggling 20 bowling pins. He's keeping these pins in the air while walking the tightrope ever slowly. Until he starts dropping some, or some of them are no longer in play, we're not going to really know the man and what he's really all about.
I made about $15,000 in the stock market yesterday, from speculative investments made last Thursday. I am going to take that profit and speculate again, on more weak stocks. If I am doing this on this pitifully low level, imagine what the high rollers are doing. This is why you have the instability in the markets IMO.
Imagine the economy is the Atlantic Ocean, with all it's size, complexities, currents, saline content, everything else, then imagine Obama or any other POTUS is a dude on the beach windsurfing or water skiing. Or fishing. Then you get the picture of really how insignificant the POTUS is on the economy.
Now imagine Congress is a hurricane in that ocean that never dissipates.....
And then you'll understand.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that NO president has expanded government with nearly this kind of velocity. Only an imbecile would think this government expansion is being done to help the economy. And are you saying the wasn't daily spew by the MSM pointing out Bush's short comings ? It seemed more like hourly spew to me..... |

He's definitely not the sharpest pencil in the drawer, but I believe he is trying to do what he thinks is right. Unfortunately, it's wrong. Deep down, however, he wants the government to play a bigger roll in everyone's lives so the ultimate goal is a move towards Socialism. (We're almost there, so he doesn't have to do much.) |

Claiming the POTUS is dumb, stupid, etc is always the sign of a weak argument, in my mind.

I would love to defend that point about his intellect.
But for this thread, I believe that driveby is correct, in terms of his priorities, an ideology is more important than solution of the problems. The President is a 'true believer.'
BTW, if he had studied history, perhaps he would have recognized one of the fastest recoveries from a recession, in the Harding Administration:
"Harding's reaction to the recession of 1920-21, which was brought on by several factors: High unemployment brought on by both the returning soldiers from WWI trying to find jobs, and the lag between the time it takes to convert high wartime industrial production to consumer production, and one that I never see cited but was crucial: The effects of the great Spanish Influenza pandemic worldwide that killed millions and restricted travel and trade. The Harding administration did very little in the way of government intervention to 'kickstart' the economy, instead letting the marketplace correct itself, and the result was one of the fastest recoveries on record."
