Rep Power: 21 | | | Is the internet pure crap? i will admit to being busy this weekend. But upon Monday morning what do i see? No pure crap zone but a hate zone.
as i am complaining to hubby....about the pure crap zone being gone...he makes an insight comment...."i thought it was all pure crap"
so is it? not this message board but the entire concept of the internet...is it pure crap? has the internet seen it's best days? What changes have you noticed over the time period you have been on it?
I will go first, I have been on the net for 13 years. It was at first a very busy and exciting place. The concept of a place with no -isms. but alas it turned out to be a place where -isms seemed maginifed, where cyber stalkers and bullies ran wild. web page building was highly easy and accessable with sites for just that. Those are gone. The free sites are gone. Band width being sucked up fast and faster. I have no concept of how much time and trouble and money it would take to run a board like this.
I have seen the growth of regional boards with media sites. There seems to be a messageboard for everything. I highly object to the message boards on cannablism all being in german. but i digress.
One thing I have not really seen. The internet being used as a force to motivate people do make real changes. It has been said that porn is the force driving the internet. I wonder if that remark still rings true?

Rep Power: 46 | | Believe it or not, I just had internet access added to my home in the summer of 2006, just a little over 2 years ago.
I did it kicking and screaming, but I figured the child needed it for research and such for school.
Then I discovered these things called message boards, and WA LA! I was hooked! Cool, I could talk to other people all over the world about various subjects. Very nice people, and a few scary people. I must have been naive, but I didn't realize the amount of hate out there by some for others who are not like them. The venom that comes out of some people's font, all because they are hidden behind the keyboard. I don't think they would say the same things to a humans face, that takes balls, which these haters don't have.
Anyway, mainly I have talked to very nice, funny, enlightened people through the magic of the Internet. It's a beautiful thing when you 'see' others, be it agree or disagree. I love learning new things and different opinions, and try to listen with open ears and an open mind. And places like this are fun and entertaining.
{Also,I love that if I need to look up anything, google is my friend. }

Rep Power: 5 | | | It's called 'information overload' by many. Ultimately it can be, and most is. However, if you can find a few solid sites for information now you are lucky. The best purpose of the net now is entertainment and quick communication to people really far away, like all media. The more information you get access to the more crap that gets added, exponentially. So, if you are looking for information that is not crap, look for the few sites that are credible and stick to them, everyone does and most of the sites you pick as being credible may or may not be factually based but ... they will at least agree with you. All media goes through a first period of being solid sources of information, then it eventually degrades into just a collection of opinions and sensationalism, the net is no exception.
Just have fun with it for the most part, message boards and chats are great ways to meet and talk to others from everywhere. Though chats died there is a group of people (I am one of them) trying to bring them back, just because we like them. Message boards however will always be around, they are the one part of the net that has been around since the beginning and will be around till the end.

But yeah, a major offender is also the IRC, very few hosts will allow those clients now. Also the non-IRC clients are overpriced, which is stupid, the code for a decent chat program is easy as pie, thus why I wrote one and am giving it away free. It's simple enough that it can't be hacked and can be setup easily. A big blow to chats was Yahoo shutting down their public rooms (have I mentioned how much I hate Yahoo ... well this is another reason).
Gaming chats fell because of the cost, gamers are far from rich, except for those lame 3D, over graphical, games that lack any real roleplaying but are so highly addictive people just can't stop. *rolls eyes* But they don't count as chats, those people are so brain dead all they talk about is 'my character this ...' and 'I have this much of ...'.
Okay, enough ranting for me.

Everything is on the internet. EVERYTHING. That would be like asking if America was all crap? The answer would be no because we also have Democrats in America, so it isn't all crap. Only about 50%. |
