Randy Couture possible return to UFC

"Reports claim that Couture's next fight would be the UFC 91 main event against Brock Lesnar (2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

It is unknown at this time whether the bout would be for Couture's UFC heavyweight title.

Couture has been inactive for over a year while waiting out the Oct. 11 end of his current UFC contract. BloodyElbow.com is reporting the bout with Lesnar would be under a new contract that would lock Couture into the UFC long-term, but the new deal would also likely pay more and offer additional benefits.

MMA Rated has also reported that the UFC is considering a departure from recent policy and may be open to co-promoting a bout with M-1 Global between Couture and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (28-1). M-1 Global currently holds Emelianenko's contract.

The UFC previously tried and failed to secure Emelianenko's services. It is unclear if the issues that previously prevented the bout between Couture and Emelianenko have now been solved.

Additional reports from the Wrestling Observer note that Couture's new deal would be for three fights. In addition to Lesnar and Emelianenko, possible future opponents discussed with Couture include UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and a fourth bout with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell."

I honestly think he'd beat Big Nog.

Lesnar's too massive, powerful and quick. Randy historically quits when he's on his back and starts taking punches.

I'd fear for Randy's life should he ever fight Fedor.

And who wants to see Couture/Liddell 3?

He and Nog would have a great fight. Evenly matched in stand up, Nog better BJJ, but Randy better wrestling and GNP. Radny is far more stronger and has much better cardio. Randy by GNP in Round 4.

Lesnar's a big problem for Randy. Lesnar has more power and can't be taken down like Gonzaga was. Randy's BJJ isn't slick enough to catch Lesnar like Mir did. Lesnar can't finish though and I think Randy wins a 5 round fight but Lesnar LNP forthe win in 3.

I think Randy matches up better with Fedor than anyone. A year ago, I would have thought it could have gone either way. Now, Fedor wins it 90% of the time.

I'd love to see Liddell go to HW and fight Crocop and Fedor. But I still want him to fight Machido or Shogun first.

Machida actually left MMA. He's training to be a runner with Kalib Starnes.

Face it, Machida's reputation was built by a 50 lb. overweight BJ Penn a washed-up Tito Ortiz.

I hope Thiago Silva KO's him.

That said, I am going to order his walk out T-shirt because it's SICK:

Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar Hype UFC 91 Matchup On ESPN | MMAFrenzy.com

UFC Announces UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar

“I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will be returning to action in the Octagon,” said Dana White, UFC President. “He’s a legend in the UFC, and one of the fighters that helped build this sport. I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath Herring. His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating. It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is one that will go down in the history books.”

Does Lesnar rate a championship match? Last I read, he was shy quite a bit of in-ring experience.

Randy will probably be stripped of his title.

Remember, Big Nog and Sylvia fought for the interim title, and Frank Mir (who Lesnar was destroying before he got caught in a knee bar) is getting the next shot.

So it's not a title fight - but the winner will get one, deservedly so.

And FWIW, Heath Herring was said to have much more experience than Lesnar - and he's faced far tougher opponents than Randy.

Bottom line - if they go standup, Randy will pick Lesnar apart. If Lesnar can take Randy down, which I expect him to do at will Lesnar will GNP him into oblivion.

I swore I'd never doubt Randy after the Gonzaga fight, but Lesnar's a whole different animal. Having been to the Minnesota intensive wrestling camp multiple times, I've seen him in person. He is incredibly BIG and QUICK and STRONG. Randy's Greco will not work because he won't be able to outmuscle Brock for position. If Lesnar can take Randy down with the ease I expect to, Rand has a puncher's chance and that's it.

Even at 2-1, Lesnar is the best top heavyweight available in the UFC.

Couture left the UFC last year because he felt disrespected by the promotion...

so the UFC had Big Nog battle Tim Sylvia for an interim title in a very thin heavyweight division. Big Nog won and thus became the interim heavyweight champion.

Frank Mir beat Brock Lesnar in Lesnar's debut.

So Big Nog and Frank Mir were selected as coaches for the upcoming season of TUF and are scheduled to fight for the interim title sometime in December.

Couture's return throws a monkeywrench in the UFC plans because the top two heavyweights, Big Nog and Frank Mir, are already committed to a fight. Since the UFC let Arlovsky go, Lesnar is the best available after destroying top 5 UFC heavyweight contender Heath Herring.

Randy's definitely more technical standing up, but Lesnar has crazy power. I bet he hits two or three times harder than Chuck. I don't know how Randy is going to pull off the win but he will. Randy = smartest fighter in the game.

Randy by IDK in Round 5.

I do not think there's any chance that the UFC strips Randy of his title. Randy's return was well received with Dana and he even signed a 3 fight deal with the UFC. I think if he gets past Lesnar he fights Big Nog and then they make the Fedor deal happen.

I wasn't aware UFC was so thin at the top. I saw Lesnar's last fight, if you want to call it that. He looked good, they just kept commenting on his lack of experience. They basically assumed he would have to get some more time under his belt before a title shot is the reason I asked.

He needs to get someone like Ricco Rodriguez to train BJJ with him because his submissions are white belt level at best.

Thing is, Randy's not a submission specialist. I think he has two submissions for his career.

Randy's an old school wrestler/GNP fighter. I just think Brock does both better. Nothing against Randy at all.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the fight.

Definitely. The way Brock acted in his last fight, can you imagine what the crowd's going to be like when Randy returns? I think this is why the UFC put this fight together and overlooked Werdum.
