Rep Power: 13 | | | If you were to retire in 30 years... would you rather have Social Security or a 401k for your reitrement plan? and why?
My thought is a 401k... I don't really believe Social Security is going to be there for me when I retire unless we keep increasing taxes. Plus where in the constitution does it say that other people should pay for my retirement? Besides I think I could get a better rate of return on my money than the government could with my money. That way when I die my kids will get my 401k money...they definitely won't be getting my Social Security money.

Rep Power: 20 | | | If I had to choose...401K obviously. But I'll cash those SS checks too and not lose a wink of sleep over it.
On a side note: Where does it say in the Constitution that other people have to pay for the roads you drive on? |

What does everyone think? it is my understanding that social security was never meant to be a retirement plan, just extra income to help pay for medical expenses as you get older. am i wrong on this?

I would much, much rather have full control over where my money is going. Social Security is a complete joke, and I would rather see it completely abolished. Force people to be fiscally responsible. The only bad thing is if we give people more money on each pay check and they don't invest it, they blow it on useless stuff. Hey, that's just more money back into the economy.

Rep Power: 13 | | | Let's not forget that this thread was to talk about retirement plans...not roads. but... Some of you may find this hard to believe but if we can put a man on the moon there is probably a good chance a private company could figure out a convenient way to get their roads paid for. Atleast we would know where our money was going. Is ther anyone that knows where their tax money is going right now?
Or we could let the state government take care of the roads... That way I don't have to pay for the city of Los Angeles, or other big cities who probably need much more repair than where I live...
Why do some of you want the federal government in charge of everything? |

What does everyone think? American society needs both so long as we run as a capitalist nation for the poor and a socialist nation for the rich. Too many people depend on it and it is why you hear nothing about it today till the next GOP wacko gets in office and wants to reward the crooks and robbers, aka the rich socialists with more money. We all need to support SS, it is one of the few great things Americans are doing for Americans today.

Why do some of you want the federal government in charge of everything? I'm not saying your point isn't without merit. I just think it's a bit oversimplistic and not fully thought through that is all. And btw, putting a man on the moon isn't exactly the best point to raise in support of private solutions. That was big gubmint that got that done. |
