| so... shutting down the government in '94 happened at a time of peace, but..............

The experience of Virginia conspicuously corroborates the disproof of both opinions. The Civil Govt, tho' bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability and performs its functions with complete success, Whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the Priesthood, & the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the Church from the State." -- James Madison; from letter to Robert Walsh (March 2, 1819) |

| Let 'em shut it down. It cracks me up every time they make public statements like this, as though it's a threat to the people. Services will continue, people in the private sector will get their paychecks, kids will get their milk at school and the congress will eventually come running back asses and elbows once they realize, as they did once before, that after awhile all they are doing is proving to everyone that the world doesn't need them.

| Agreement has to be reached by March 4th and Congress is taking off this week. If agreement is not reached, Congress will probably allocate funds for the government to run for a month or so while both sides play their silly games. As an alternative, Congress could allocate funds for critical services. That seems unlikely considering the political fallout. If Congress should do nothing, the government would literal stop functioning, no S.S checks, no supplies going to Afganistan, etc.. |

| I say shut um down, and FIRE A BUNCH of them. Most of them are just friggen idiot leeches off the taxpayers anyway.

| So what is the big deal if the representatives disagree to spending cuts? Dems are thinking the disagreement will lead to shutting down government when nothing gets funded. Why not keep sending through a combination of spending packages until they get enough votes to carry. ![]() You know what is really strange to me? The fact that you have no problem with the Democrats shutting down the state of Wisconsin, yet you want to whine and blame the Republicans for shutting down the federal government.

| Which ones would you fire? The leech who helps the retired and the disabled navigate the system or the leech who does her part to keep the planes in the sky and not in the buildings?

As far as the other poster who said watch out when seniors don't get their SS checks, that's exactly why the congressmen will come running back. If liberals think that shutting down government will work politically in their favor after they keep proving to be the ones unable to reach a budget compromise - even when they were the majority - they're out of their minds. they thought the same thing ion '94 and America cheered the GOP for doing just that. How soon they forget. Fiscal responsibility was what this is about, and it's one of the issues that the GOP used to clean the democrat's collective clock this past November by an historic margin. The dems held congress for all of a few years years and then lost it again. The democrats of today don't get it - America doesn't want socialism. Period.

| Oh geez, they'll coming running back. They always do, trying to look like heroes on white horses when they're really just terrified for their futures. 2012 isn't that far away. We should cut the bs and just start telling them, full-faced, to stop screwing around. This isn't a theater stage - they're supposed to be getting things done. The GOP is right. Shut it down.
