Shutting Down The US Government

So what is the big deal if the representatives disagree to spending cuts? Dems are thinking the disagreement will lead to shutting down government when nothing gets funded. Why not keep sending through a combination of spending packages until they get enough votes to carry.Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see images.

Let 'em shut it down. It cracks me up every time they make public statements like this, as though it's a threat to the people. Services will continue, people in the private sector will get their paychecks, kids will get their milk at school and the congress will eventually come running back asses and elbows once they realize, as they did once before, that after awhile all they are doing is proving to everyone that the world doesn't need them.

Agreement has to be reached by March 4th and Congress is taking off this week. If agreement is not reached, Congress will probably allocate funds for the government to run for a month or so while both sides play their silly games. As an alternative, Congress could allocate funds for critical services. That seems unlikely considering the political fallout.

If Congress should do nothing, the government would literal stop functioning, no S.S checks, no supplies going to Afganistan, etc..

Oh geez, they'll coming running back. They always do, trying to look like heroes on white horses when they're really just terrified for their futures. 2012 isn't that far away. We should cut the bs and just start telling them, full-faced, to stop screwing around. This isn't a theater stage - they're supposed to be getting things done.

The GOP is right. Shut it down.

You do understand that the Republicans already passed a spending bill, and that the Senate has not even considered it yet, don't you? That means that, if the government does shut down, it will be the Democrats in the Senate who shut it down.

You know what is really strange to me? The fact that you have no problem with the Democrats shutting down the state of Wisconsin, yet you want to whine and blame the Republicans for shutting down the federal government.

Before a shutdown, one of the parties will offer to extend the operation of the government for a few weeks or months. If the other party refuses, they can kiss their political future goodbye. We are quick to say shut it down, but when 53 million seniors don't get their check, or local banks close because they can't get fund transfers from the Fed, or supplies are delayed to troops in Afghanistan, or airports close because FAA traffic controllers don't report to work you can bet the raft of voters will fall on whoever they think is responsible.

The revenue side will be addressed and taxes will be raised before this is over.

The GOP will suffer the most if a shutdown occurrs and a shutdown would hasten the day raising taxes happens proportionately to the length of the shutdown.

Liberals will attempt to raise taxes whether the Gov shuts down or stays open or stands on its head sideways.

As far as the other poster who said watch out when seniors don't get their SS checks, that's exactly why the congressmen will come running back. If liberals think that shutting down government will work politically in their favor after they keep proving to be the ones unable to reach a budget compromise - even when they were the majority - they're out of their minds. they thought the same thing ion '94 and America cheered the GOP for doing just that. How soon they forget.

Fiscal responsibility was what this is about, and it's one of the issues that the GOP used to clean the democrat's collective clock this past November by an historic margin. The dems held congress for all of a few years years and then lost it again. The democrats of today don't get it - America doesn't want socialism. Period.

I seriously doubt it will have much of an effect on liberals one way or another, since there's so few actual liberals in congress. I don't see a positive effect on Democrats either. I simply see more of a negative effect on Republicans. The fight right now that's important to the Republicans is the fight for the revenue side. Republicans are going to loose that fight now or in 2012 and taxes are going up as much as spending is coming down, now the question is who pays a little more and what projects do we shut down or trim.

We should cut the bs and just start telling them, full-faced, to stop screwing around. This isn't a theater stage - they're supposed to be getting things done.

The GOP is right. Shut it down.
If the GOP doesn't get it's way, they should take their ball and go home. I like that adult thinking.
Just like the Democrats did in Wisconsin....Is that what you mean Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see images.
No, this is different. In Wisconsin the democrats did act childish. In this instance the GOP is saying, in essence, "We will not waste any more of the taxpayers money, need to lower taxes to get the economy moving as Obama's spending put us on the edge of bankruptcy, and if the democrats want to sell allowing government to shut down if they cannot raise taxes as an issue to the American people in 2012, be our guest." That's what's happening here and the GOP should NOT blink or they'll be no distinction between them, which is what the democrats want after November. Don;t blink. If shutting down is what not blinking means, shut it down, full down, all the way, and let the democrats take the heat, because Americans want lower taxes, not higher taxes. The GOP should stand 100% firm. This is a winner. 100%

The liberal debating strategy here: Jump on a thread or comment that makes Obama looks bad, and
1. Attack and/or dismissively mock the poster
2. Change the subject, endlessly
3. Spin the minutia to run out the clock
