It isn't about forgetting. Hell, I had a shot in their honor ... I think one for each and every individual involved.

We could never carry off another Operation Overlord. The armchair QBs would call it unjustified, and bemoan the loss of life involved in a full-frontal amphibious assault.

That was the best we ever were, and the best we're likely to ever be. Well, except for Operation Detachment -- the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Rangers-Lead the Way!

Before the 5th Ranger Battalion landing on Dog White Sector, Omaha Beach, in World War II, the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the 150-foot (46 m) cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, a few miles to the west, to destroy a five-gun battery of 155 mm artillery guns. Under constant fire during the climb, they encountered only a small company of Germans on the cliffs and the artillery withdrawn some 500 meters. The guns were later found and destroyed, and the Rangers cut and held the main road for two days before being relieved.[1]
