Fox News on top: Network hits 10 years of #1

I really never considered the virtues and qualities of Fox News as worthy of an "interesting debate". I see it as ham handed cheerleading on behalf of those who think they are getting informed but are actually tuning in to validate their own world view. Kind of a 'rub your nose in it because we're more popular than you' topic. Hardly interesting.

They were backed by five news orgainizations, not every major news organization.

Belo Corporation, Cox Television, Inc., Gannett Co., Inc., Media General Operations, Inc., and Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc.

Fox did not initiate the lawsuit. Fox never sued to control content. Jane Akre and her husband Steve Wilson sued Fox after they were fired from working for Fox for refusing to alter information from Monsanto during a report about hormones and cows. They initially won but then the decision was reversed on appeal. THEN Fox filed a lawsuit against Akre and Wilson to recoup trial costs.

"During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so."

Jane Akre and her husband Steve Wilson are former employees of Fox owned-and-operated station WTVT in Tampa, Florida. In 1997, they were fired from the station after refusing to knowingly include false information in their report concerning the Monsanto Company’s production of RBGH, a drug designed to make cows produce more milk. They successfully sued under Florida’s whistle blower law and were awarded a US $425,000 settlement by jury decision. However, Fox appealed to an appellate court and won, after the court declared that the FCC policy against falsification that Fox violated was just a policy and not a “law, rule, or regulation”, and so the whistle blower law did not apply.

It should be no surprise that FOX does so well, numberswise.

What they have created is a place where all disgruntled people, aka self-proclaimed "Conservatives" can congregate for their self-chosen and pre-approved "news."

Whereas, CNN, msnbc, etc. are all vying for the same people. They can't outFOX FOX so they can never pull the rabid RWers in. Therefore they share amongst the rest of the normal thinking population and FOX keep the mass of the BORG.

It's not rocket-science.
