| Quote: ALBANY -- Hate crimes across New York state jumped 14 percent in 2009, led by an increase in attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions, state records released yesterday show. There were 683 hate crimes reported to police authorities across the state in 2009 compared with 599 in 2008, according to a report released by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services. Anti-Semitic incidents, which made up 37 percent of the reported hate crimes, were up 15 percent in one year, from 219 in 2008 to 251 in 2009. The report found anti-black crimes, 21 percent of the total, were down slightly from 147 in 2008 to 144 in 2009. Anti-white hate crimes increased from 21 to 29. Anti-gay hate crimes were up sharply, with those targeting male homosexuals jumping 32 percent, from 62 to 82, and those aimed at lesbians up by more than 200 percent, from eight to 25. Crimes motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment rose from eight to 11. Hmmm. Interesting numbers, eh? (Sits back and waits for the onslaught . . . )

| Not really. If one reads most of your threads one would conclude that muslims are under every bush waiting to behead every non-muslim.

| Doesn't suprise me. HATE is up 14% in America. Hard times bring out the worst in a lot of people. |

| Why do I suppose echo chamber members are racist and hate mongers? Has it anything to do with the way they are attracted to threads such as this one? Or that they deny the obvious distinction between a crime committed against a person because of their race, ethnicity or creed and one motivated by greed or opportunity? Is the burning of a church a violent act, are such actions different than burning down a house for insurance (also an act of violence where others maybe harmed)? Is gay bashing or bullying an act of violence? Of course, but when the victim is targeted because of their sexual orientation and not as a random victim, the law correctly aggrevates the offense. Are the comments of too many 'conservatives' on this message board expessions of hate and fear of ethnic minorities, illegal aliens, Muslims and liberals? Of course, but they are not crimes. Simply examples of ignorance, a necessary condition for bigotry.

| Many of the self proclaiming conservative on this board are little more than worshippers of Mammon and/or outright racists seeking to obfucate their brownshirts behind the mask of being conservatives. If that isn't obvious, you're not paying attention. There are real conservatives on this board who DO MAKE SENSE. |

Today's 'conservatives' are like the radical chic of the late 1960's, desperate for attention and a feeling of belonging. They are callous and cruel and never question the RW dogma and propaganda which pollutes the airways and which defines their ideology for them. They're easy to spot. They never submit a thougtful post, rather they quote others at length or post one sentence idiotgrams - see any of Revere's posts or those of Stepanie, CrusaderFrank or Willow Tree for examples.

Interesting numbers, eh? and every time the economy goes bad, jews get victimized. and the inflammatory dialogue surrounding the building of mosques doesn't help muslims. people think they can say whatever they want. but the reality is, language has an effect whether its in regard to jews, muslims, gays or any other group.

Well I agree with most of what you wrote. In fact, it seems that some Muslim scholars are now blaming the Jews for the GZ mosque controversy. Quote: A number of Al Azhar ulema expressed their opposition to building a mosque near [where] the events of September 11 [occurred], convinced that it is “a conspiracy to confirm a clear connection between the strikes of September [11] and Islam.” Dr. ‘Abd al-Mu‘ti Bayumi, a member of the Islamic Research Academy [of Al Azhar] told Al Masry Al Youm that he rejects the building of any mosque in this area [Ground Zero], because the “devious mentality” desires to connect these events [of 9/11] with Islam, though he maintains that Islam is innocent of this accusation. Instead, it is a “Zionist conspiracy,” which many are making use of to harm the religion. But I will still argue that the big story here is the rise in anti-semitism, which the press seems to ignore. And here we have Katie Couric claiming that Islamophobia is the one of the "most disturbing" stories of the year. Quote: Katie Couric, in her CBSNews.com review of 2010, highlighted the controversy surrounding the Park51 project. “The bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface,” she told her panel. In that media narrative, she saw “a seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims,” which she theorized could be remedied by another, more lighthearted narrative: “Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show.”
