2. Country Charm, Tír na Fiúise
Fancy renting out your own little village of cottages in the Shannon region? Do it at Tír na Fiúise, which is 2km from the village of Terryglass, on an organic farm. Tír na Fiúise – which translates as 'land of fuchsia' – was set up in 1999 by the Heenan family. They have lived and worked the land for many generations and wanted to give tourists an authentic rural experience. There are five self-catering cottages here. The Granary, Stables and Lime Kiln farmstead buildings appeared on the first-edition Ordinance Survey map, predating the famine; they have been restored in the traditional style using eco-friendly materials, and form a cluster-like traditional rural settlement. Another two, the Hawthorn and Brambles, are about 150 metres up a quiet road, at a separate location. The great thing about this is that guests can have their own space but link up when they need to. There's a sauna for guests' use and bicycles are provided free of charge. In the near vicinity you can do boating, water-skiing, karting, golf, fishing and horseriding. The nearby Derg Inn and Paddy's Bar (an awardwinning pub with music five nights a week) provide great eating and drinking options. This is a tranquil, lovely place and very much a retreat. Combined (and obviously depending on the sleeping arrangements), the cottages could sleep 16. Prices vary per cottage, but a weekend off-season in the Stables, for example, costs from €200, and a week, April - September, is €380.
