The Corruption Continues: FDA Approves Antidepressants for Children, Even After Revelations of Bribery

The FDA has approved Forest Laboratories' antidepressant Lexapro (escitalopram) for use in children and adolescents, even as the federal government and 11 states have filed a lawsuit against the company for illegally pushing the drug on kids.

The federal government has accused Forest of bribing pediatricians to prescribe Lexapro and a related drug, Celexa (citalopram), to treat depression in children, even though such use had not been approved by the FDA at the time. The government also claims that Forest concealed the results of studies showing the drugs to be no more effective than a placebo.

"By knowingly and actively promoting these antidepressants for off-label pediatric use without disclosing the results of the negative pediatric study and by paying kickbacks, Forest caused false claims to be submitted to federal health care programs in violation of the False Claims Act," said the federal complaint, issued on Feb. 25.

And the FDA is controlling our food and our drugs and cigarettes and just about everything else we consume???

An example:

It would make sense that with all the harmful chemicals put into traditional cigarettes that the government would be absolutely against tobacco companies adding anything more to your cancer causing cigarettes. You'd think that the government would even be promoting a healthier alternative such as the increasingly popular electronic cigarettes
But the FDA is fighting that one. hmm, wonder why?!

They wouldn't want to take money away from the tobacco companies for their cancer causing cigarettes, or the pharmaceutical companies for all their medications to try and quit smoking. The FDA has done testing and gave results July 2009 to show e-cigs are 1,400 times better for people then regular cigarettes. Instead of promoting these though, they are trying to ban them, meanwhile making regular cigarettes even worse right under our noses!!

EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is added in rings to the cigarette paper; (yay, more chemicals please)...... if the smoker is not puffing on the cigarette, it goes out, but if they are puffing, then doesn't that mean the smoker is inhaling plastics??? The FDA is doing more damage than they are helping anybody. Unless smoking plasic is harmless. The FDA has become as corrupt as the UN

Down with the FDA, contact the FDA and tell them to use some common sense

I am a believer in capitalism but as long as government keeps it's greasy fingers in the honey pot, then I am disgusted and afraid we are not safe. I hope it is not true. But it seems everything is corrupt and turning to big daddy government for everything

I am sure there are many more examples of the FDA's rush to keep us all safe and warm

1. The FDA has only had regulatory authority of tobacco for a few months. So how do you really expect them to be able to move major policy items in that amount of time?
2. The opposition to "electronic cigarettes" is that they're be marketed to young people and that tobacco companies are trying to claim their safe.

They'll do it under the auspices of regulation, which needs no more approval than that of the head bureaucrat du jour.

Regulating our industries into oblivion

That is right, cigarettes and tobacco products of any kind are already against the law. Heck, a child under 18 is not even allowed to enter a cigarette store, nor is it lawful for them to touch any tobacco product. A store can lose it's license for violating that law.

It is about controlling the masses.

Yet another federal agency that needs to be broken down back to formula and original intent. Along with the EPA.
