Not to solve the problem of oil pricing, today, no, it won't.
You just answered your own question. "perceived wrold oil shortage"
Here's a head's up...nobody is stopping them from doing so except the bean counters.
It is not economically feasible to recover that oil.
Yes, so we're told. Sadly the oil is impregrated in solid rock and the cost of recovery make that solution impractical.
Grand idea. Why hasn't anyone else ever thought of that? Yawn.... BI - PARTISAN LEGISLATORS CONDEMN SALAZAR ....OIL SHALE While consumers battle $4-a-gallon Gas prices , a single U.S. Senator is trying to block America from developing Oil shale , an American resource that could single - handedly END America's dependence on expensive foreign oil .
Colorado's Ken Salazar (Democrat) is reportedly trying to use the U. S. Defense Authorization Bill to put Oil shale Development in Colorado , Utah and Wyoming on permanent Hold by blocking Commercial oil shale Leasing on Public lands .
Salazar also plans to use the Defense Authorization Bill to block the efficient development of an estimated, NINE Trillion cubic feet of clean-burning Natural Gas in the U. S. Naval Oil Shale Reserve , located in Western Colorado . That gas is enough to heat Four Million homes for 20 Years .
" I fear that Ken Salazar has been misled by Environmental Extremists who don't seem to care about seeing America come more Energy Independent ", said Wyoming State Senator Bill Vasey (D), Board Chairman of Americans for American Energy (A.A.E.). " The leaders of some of these Groups actually 'want' Consumers to get hit with higher prices , because They believe that this is the only Way to force People to conserve . That's not right .
We should be looking to Increase the supply of American energy for America , which will help reduce the upward pressure on Prices ." American Solutions - RAND: U.S. Oil Shale Resources Are Three Times Larger Than the Current Oil Reserves in Saudi Arabia
However, Shell Oil has been investing in technology that would make extraction much cheaper than standard pit mining:
Shell Oil Company has successfully conducted small-scale field tests of an insitu process based on slow underground heating via thermal conduction. Larger scale operations are required to establish technical viability, especially with regard to avoiding adverse impacts on groundwater quality. Shell anticipates that, in contrast to the cost estimates for mining and surface retorting, the petroleum products produced by their thermally conductive in-situ method will be competitive at crude oil prices in the mid-$20s per barrel. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 specifically declared that it was the policy of the United States to recognize oil shale as a strategically important domestic resource. Section 369 states:
DECLARATION OF POLICY.—Congress declares that it is the policy of the United States that—
(1) United States oil shale, tar sands, and other unconventional fuels are strategically important domestic resources that should be developed to reduce the growing dependence of the United States on politically and economically unstable sources of foreign oil imports;
(2) the development of oil shale, tar sands, and other strategic unconventional fuels, for research and commercial development, should be conducted in an environmentally sound manner, using practices that minimize impacts; and
(3) development of those strategic unconventional fuels should occur, with an emphasis on sustainability, to benefit the United States while taking into account affected States and communities.
At least attempt to know what you are talking about ok???

You do know it's your pals in the Democrat party we have to blame for that right. Standing in the way of developing out own resources for years now is why we send so much money over there.
I am totally for developing any viable alternative to oil, But until we do I would like to see us using our own oil and not buying it over seas.

If we took the $700 billion we are spending on foreign oil and invested it in American Energy Independence, the problem would be solved. But we have the most craven politicians in the world. |

Rep Power: 12 | | | Drilling is procrastination, and it just extends the problem to "someday, in the next crisis, then we can start thinking about it". Put the effort into alternative energies instead. Oil isn't going to be any cheaper, regardless of where they drill next. |
