Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the U.S. mortgage finance giants that were taken over by the government this month, said on Monday they were subpoenaed for documents as part of a federal grand jury investigations into their accounting.

ABC'S CHARLIE GIBSON: In each instance, when the Capital Gains rate was dropped, revenues from the tax increased; the government took in more money. And in the 1980s, when the tax was increased to 28 percent, the revenues went down. So why raise it at all, especially given the fact that 100 million people in this country own stock and would be affected?

OBAMA: Well, Charlie, what I've said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.

The rot reaches beyond any particular admin of the thrifts and Raines, Johnson etc aren't going to be hauled in because they are protected by the shadow of a nominee for POTUS.

Shut down Fannie and Freddie. Their charter was a bad idea propped-up with bad laws meant to buy votes.

Shut 'em down.
