If the oil companies were all-powerful, we wouldn't have CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) laws.

If anyone is really holding the power, it's developers. If you want to get into national politics, you usually start out in state or local politics. And if you want to do that, sucking up to developers is probably a good idea.
