Georgia's parliament has overridden President Salome Zurabishvili's veto on the law on foreign agents, the session was broadcast on the website of the country's top legislative body.

“Eighty-four MPs in favor, four against. The law has been adopted,” Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said.

A simple majority of votes was needed to override the veto.
It is specified that two votes were held in the Parliament. The first was against the President's motivated remarks, and the second was in favor of the original version of the law on foreign agents.

The day before, the parliament's legal committee supported overriding the veto. The session was held amid verbal altercations and polemics between the deputies. Parliamentary Secretary of the President Giorgi Mskhiladze read to the MPs a document with Zurabishvili's motivated remarks according to which the law should be repealed the very next day after its entry into force. The head of state did not present any other remarks.

On May 14, the Georgian Parliament adopted in the third and final reading the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” introduced by the Georgian Dream. It envisages registration of non-profit legal entities and media outlets whose income - in particular, more than 20 percent - comes from abroad. In addition, all organizations “pursuing the interests of foreign forces” must be registered in the state register. At the same time it will be necessary to reflect the income received and fill out a declaration, otherwise a fine of 25 thousand GEL will be imposed.
